Ellwood Ainsworth wears gloves to suppress the magic in his hands. When he moves into his family’s abandoned mansion, he wants to suppress his memories, too. As he attempts to settle into his new life, his hands tingle and itch with the urge to be free from their gloves.
At last, Ellwood finds an irresistible reason to take off his gloves and use his magic. He gathers twenty-nine household objects and one scarecrow and brings them all to life. He declares that he is their father and creator, and he promises to love them unconditionally. There’s only one rule: the objects can never leave the house. When Stoik, the scarecrow, decides to test Ellwood’s boundaries, he ignites the spark that leads to revolution in the halls of Ainsworth Manor. Without a proper family to keep him from losing his mind, Ellwood has no choice but to confront the demons of his past.
